Mass Replacement and Backfill Layers¶
Building mass replacement and backfill layers can be an automated process in Gemini Terrain.
The method requires that you have physical layers for the masses to be replaced in the drawing, i.e., vegetation layers, topsoil layers, or mass replacement layers. Furthermore, you must have physical layers for soil and/or rock. These layers are "good" layers that the excavation can be built against.
Procedure
- Construct the excavation's surface with cut/fill activated
- Build the excavation with the Auto-build replacement and backfill layers option activated
How the Program Builds the Layers¶
What does the program do?
- Creates Gemini theoretical layer 03: Mass replacement
- Copies the boundary contour in the surface layer to the mass replacement layer and sets the following properties:
- Type: Auxiliary line
- Cut/fill: Checked
- Method: Manual
- Builds the excavation and now includes the mass replacement layer.

- Creates Gemini theoretical layer 04: Backfill
- Copies the outer contour in the mass replacement layer to the backfill layer and sets the following properties:
- Type: Auxiliary line
- Cut/fill: Checked
- Method: Manual (note that rock bench width is set to 0 under Edit cut/fill parameters)
- Builds the excavation and now includes the backfill layer.

Note
If you build with this option checked, the layers 03: Mass replacement and 04: Backfill will be deleted first if they exist.
You can also perform the automated process manually and only use Build surfaces without having checked the auto-build option.
