Generate Cross-Sections from Own Data

For tunnel scan data, you must run a 3D triangulation before you can generate profiles. The program has two methods for this: Triangulation along line and 3D triangulation. You can read more about this under Triangulate data.

To create the profiles, we use Gemini profile generator, which can provide the following layers:

  1. Gemini physical
  2. Advanced section

The Gemini profile generator is described in more detail in the chapter on General Profiles.

Tilting Profiles

When working with tunnels, it is possible to tilt the profiles so that they stand normal to the vertical curvature. This can be set in the profile generator setup. Alternatively, we can do this in cross-section generation.

That the profiles are tilted will be visible in the vertical list field for cross-section editing.

For tilted profiles, we also get information about the slope and height to CL in the profile.

How to Tilt VIPS Projects?

In VIPS projects, the cross-sections are not tilted. If we, for example, generate profiles for VIPS projects with the option to create new cross-sections, the profiles containing VIPS layers will remain vertical after generation.

Profiles with VIPS layers that are not tilted

However, we can tilt the profiles with VIPS using the Tilt profiles... option on the context menu. The operation will mark the profiles as tilted (with values for slope and CL height) and adjust the heights in the theoretical layers to be local with origin in the vertical curvature. Note that physical layers and advanced sections will be removed.

How Does Tilting Affect Mass Calculation?

This is described in more detail in the section on calculation method for cross-section method.
