Water and sewer measurement instructions¶
Introduction¶
For Gemini VA, Volue has created a proposal for measurement instructions. It also specifies all properties contained in Gemini Terrain's template for delivery to Gemini VA.
Info
We recommend that you set aside time to read these measurement instructions to ensure good measurement practices. By following these, measurement data for new installations will flow smoothly from the field to Gemini VA.
Below you'll find a summary of important points from the instructions.
Measuring pipes¶
All pipes that have the same properties should appear as continuous line objects from one installation point to the next. Furthermore, measurements should always be taken at the center of the pipe, and the height reference is:
- Outside top of pipe for pressure pipes
- Inside bottom of pipe for gravity pipes

Tip
How we choose to record this in the field is up to the individual surveyor, but it's important to maintain control of the height reference. If it's most practical to measure the outside top of all pipes in the field, we need a routine to adjust for the pipe dimension for gravity pipes. This can be done by adjusting the height on the rod in the field or manually in Gemini Terrain afterward.
Measuring manholes¶
For round circular manholes, the position of the manhole is north/east center of the manhole, and for height, it's the inside bottom of the manhole. To determine the height of the manhole, we must also record X, Y, and Z for the manhole cover.

The figure shows an example of measuring a typical sewage manhole and water manhole.
A = X, Y, and Z Center top of lid
B = X, Y, and Z Center bottom of manhole
C = X, Y, and Z Center top of lid
D = X, Y, and Z Center bottom of manhole
E = Water pipe
Measuring other installations¶
Non-circular installations¶
For non-circular installations, we measure the outline and all lids. One manhole lid must be the "master" that holds the ID of the object. For this one, we must also measure the inside bottom of the structure. The other lids can have the same ID but with an additional sequence number.

Installations without lids¶
Installations without lids (inlets, outlets, branches, service connections, and ground valves) should be measured with:
- X, Y, and Z inside bottom of pipe for gravity pipes
- X, Y, and Z outside top of pipe for pressure pipes
