Exercise 1.3 - Import Map Data with Batch Import¶
Task¶
In this exercise, you will import digital map data (FKB) from a SOSI file using batch import. Many formats can be imported in the same way. An alternative to batch import is to create an application layer and then import via the application layer's properties dialog.
The SOSI file to be used as the map base is named KO13-kart45.sos and contains a technical map. When using batch import, the contents of the file are automatically distributed to predefined application layers.
This exercise assumes you have created a project as described in Exercise 1.1 or Exercise 1.2.
Solution Proposal¶
See our YouTube channel Construction by Volue for a quick walkthrough of the exercise.
Open Project¶
Start Gemini Terrain and switch to the project KO10 if the project menu for another project appears.
Open Drawing¶
In this exercise, we use drawing 001. Select drawing KO104001 Project Data in the project menu.

Click Open Drawing to open the drawing with terrain model menus.
Import SOSI Data with Batch Job¶
Activate the Application Layer tab in the vertical list field. The list is empty, meaning no application layers have been created yet.

Select Import... from the File menu on the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Find the folder ...\Data\Eksempelsamling-Nor.

Select the SOSI file KO13-kart_45.sos and click Open.
Note
Map data © Bergen kommune 2019 may only be used for training and demo purposes. Order map data for Bergen for commercial use at Kartbutikken: Ambita - Infoland

Select the batch job Full Layering of Map Data (SOSI codes ver. 4.5) and click Import.
Note
The SOSI version in the SOSI file determines which batch jobs can be selected. You must know whether the SOSI file contains FKB map data, municipal plan area, or zoning plan proposal.
The program imports the file and distributes the content to application layers.
Note
The coordinate system in the SOSI file is Euref89 zone 32. If the program finds a different coordinate system than the project has, or no coordinate system in the file, you may be asked to transform the data. If you know the file has data in the same coordinate system as the project, click Cancel in the transformation dialog that appears.
Double-click the middle mouse button to display the entire map on the screen.

Info
Right-clicking in the application layer list shows available functions. For example, you can move application layers up ([U]) and down ([D]) in the list, set an application layer active ([A]), toggle visibility ([V]), and open/close for editing ([E]).
Select all layers in the list ([Ctrl]+[A]).
Right-click and choose Group Selection ([Ctrl] + [G]). Enter Map Data as the group name.

Note
An asterisk (*) in front of the application layer name indicates that the layer contains unsaved changes. Click the Save button ([Ctrl]+[S]) to save the changes to file, and the asterisks disappear.
Select Terrengform45, and choose Set Active (A) with the right mouse button.
The active application layer is highlighted, and its content is shown in the horizontal list field (object list).

You have now completed the exercise and can either continue with the next exercise or exit the program.
Note
The asterisk (*) in front of the application layer name shows that changes have been made to the layer that are not saved to disk. Under Properties for the layer, you can choose to ignore or save these changes. Click the icon to save, and the asterisk disappears.
Close Drawing¶
Select File - Close. Answer Yes to save the drawing.
This closes the window and opens the project menu.
The application layers you created are saved in the project in Gemini Connected.
Exit Program¶
Select File - Exit. Answer Yes to save.
This closes the project and exits the program.
