Exercise 1.2 - Creating a New Local Project

Task

If you do not have the opportunity to work with cloud projects stored in Gemini Connected, this exercise will guide you in creating a similar new project, KO10 (CourseTasks 1.0), which is stored locally. Note that the project name is the same as in Exercise 1.1, but there will be two different projects saved in different locations.

The following exercises in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 use the cloud project created in Exercise 1.1, but can also be completed in the same way with the local project you create here.

Solution Proposal

See our YouTube channel Construction by Volue for a quick walkthrough of the exercise.

Create a New Project

Start Gemini Terrain.

You will be greeted by the project menu in Gemini Terrain.

Gemini Terrain project menu

Click New Project... at the bottom left of the dialog to create a new project.

Click OK to close the current project.

Dialog for new project

Select Gemini.prj under simple template, which gives you standard suggestions for drawings in the project.

Check Predefined project folder under project details.

Enter KO10 in the Project Name field and select Standard in the dropdown menu for location.

Select coordinate and elevation system, then click OK.

The project is now created and is located at the specified path for the Standard project folder.

Tip

If you want to create a project outside a standard folder, check Custom project folder under Project Type and browse to the desired folder.

Right-click the project and select Edit Project Information....

Edit project information

Enter the project information in the fields:

Project information

This information will later be automatically included in the title field on drawings linked to the project.

Click OK to return to the project menu.

When you create the project, the program adds empty drawings from the prj template, which you can use directly.

Each drawing (BIM file) is named according to a fixed naming convention. The first four characters are the project name. The next four digits (4) are the program's code and cannot be changed by the user. The last three digits are the drawing number. According to this naming convention, you can create up to 999 drawings per project, from drawing number 001 to 999.

The project menu is divided into two parts, with the project list on the left and the drawing list on the right.

The project list contains predefined project folders (after the first installation, you only have the standard folder, but you can create more as needed) and a folder for recently used projects.

Tip

You can add predefined project folders, change the number of projects shown under recently used projects, and enable or disable cloud storage of Gemini Terrain projects in Gemini Connected by clicking the gear icon. Remember to close the project first by right-clicking the project and selecting Close Project.

You can select a drawing number by pointing and clicking in the drawing list, or by scrolling through the list with the arrow keys.

You can create new drawings by clicking the New Drawing... button to the right under the drawing list. As you create new drawings, they will appear in the list.

You have now finished the exercise and can either continue with the next exercise or exit the program.

Exiting the Program

Click Cancel in the project menu.

Select File - Exit.

Answer Yes to save.

This closes the project and exits the program.
