Gemini Terrain Project Menu

Use this dialog to manage both Gemini Terrain projects and drawings in the projects.

Where do I find the dialog?

In the Gemini Terrain project menu, select the Help button.

Overview

The menu consists of two lists/tables:

  • On the left, an overview of projects
  • On the right, an overview of drawings in the selected project

Both tables are described in detail below.

Projects

Gemini Connected projects are indicated with a folder with a blue cloud icon and will contain one or more Gemini Terrain projects. We call these Gemini Terrain projects cloud projects, and they are indicated with a larger blue cloud icon. The idea is that a Gemini Connected project is linked to one contract, and a set of cloud projects can share this contract. There can be several reasons to split up a project into multiple cloud projects, for example, it may be appropriate to split large road projects into several sections.

Gemini Terrain projects that are not stored in Gemini Connected are called local projects. These are sorted into folders that are displayed with a yellow folder icon in the list. These folders can be defined yourself by clicking Settings and then Predefined project folders.

We can also filter the content in the list with the Project filter field. Type text in the field to search and the list is updated immediately. The search is case-insensitive.

Creating Projects

Press the New project button under the project list on the left, and the dialog for creating projects opens. Continue to the help for New project.

Press the small arrow to the left of New project to see more options for creating projects. With Copy project to Gemini Connected you can navigate to an existing local project and upload this as a new cloud project. This is described in more detail in separate dialog help.

Log in to Gemini Connected

Use the Log in option at the top right of the menu to log in to your company's Microsoft Entra ID or Windows Live account. By logging in, depending on your role in the projects, you will get access to cloud projects stored in Gemini Connected.

When you are logged in, the organization(s) the user belongs to are listed in the field under the username. The dropdown menu is used to switch between organizations.

When you close Gemini Terrain, you remain logged in, so you don't need to enter username and password every time you start the program.

More about Cloud Projects

When working with cloud projects, it's important to know that the data is downloaded locally, and all necessary uploading and downloading is done automatically. This way you get both the security and flexibility of collaborating over the internet, while getting the speed of working locally. When you open a cloud project that still doesn't exist locally, the first download will take some time, depending on the project's size and internet bandwidth.

The location of local copies of cloud projects will normally be in the directory %localappdata%\Gemini\CloudCache\. This can be changed via settings in the project menu.

Right-click Options in Project Menu

By right-clicking in the project list, you get access to the following options:

  • Edit project information
Both cloud projects and local projects can have information about name, address, and more associated with them. You can change this information by right-clicking on the project in the left table and selecting Edit project information.

  • Close project
    Closes the current project.

  • Upload to Gemini Connected
With this option, you can copy a local Gemini Terrain project to a Connected project. The user selects which subfolders with data are transferred to the new project. The two Gemini Terrain projects will then live completely separately: Changes in the local project will not change the cloud project in Gemini Connected, and vice versa.

  • View data in browser
Opens the web application for Gemini Connected in the overview of the content in the current cloud project.

  • Download local copy
Use this function when you need to download a local copy of a cloud project, for example for external archiving at project end. You specify where the local copy should be downloaded (preferably an empty folder), and a separate subfolder corresponding to the project name will be created. The download contains the current version of files that have been uploaded to Gemini Connected at the time of download. Note that the content in the various .GC folders are helper files that will have no function in the downloaded copy.

  • Remove from this list (when right-clicking under Recently used projects)
Used to remove the project from the list of recently used projects.

Other Settings

Use the settings button with tooltip Manage project menu to set other settings for the project, such as predefined project folders, single and double-click to open, activation of Gemini Connected usage, and number of projects in recently used projects.

Drawings

Drawings are opened by double-clicking in the drawing list on the right, or by selecting a drawing and using the Open button below the drawing list.

We can also filter the content in the list with the Drawing filter field. Type text in the field to search and the list is updated immediately. The search is case-insensitive.

Creating New Drawings

Procedure

  1. Open the project you want to create a drawing in.
  2. Press the New drawing button below the drawing list on the right in the dialog.
  3. Fill out the dialog to create drawing number, drawing type, name, and description.

Context Menu for Drawings

Drawings have a context menu, i.e., a set of functions on the right mouse button:

  • Edit drawing information and Edit revisions let you enter the traditional information about a drawing.
  • Delete gives us the opportunity to delete drawings in the list.
  • Publish to Gemini 3D Field marks the drawing with an F in the left column. Drawings marked with F will appear in the project menu for Gemini 3D Field, as described below.
  • Open in read-only mode lets you open a drawing that is locked by others or open a drawing without locking it.
  • Duplicate creates an identical copy with the same commands and layers.
  • Change drawing category
  • Zip drawings collects the drawings and all associated content in a ZIP file for easy and structured distribution. In practice, a project is created that only contains the selected drawings, including the project file, inserted layers, models, and other relevant files.
  • Copy drawing information to Excel
  • Print drawings lets you print many drawings in one operation. Only terrain model drawings and presentation drawings are printed. For terrain model drawings, everything shown in the drawing is printed. For cross-section drawings, all profiles are printed.
  • Generate map extracts opens the drawings in read-only mode and exports all inserted map extracts. If the drawings are already open, you will be asked to close them, with the option to save changes before closing. When the process is complete, a message is displayed with the names of the regenerated map extracts. If no map extracts are found in the selected drawings, an error message is displayed. Be aware that the function can be slow with large drawings.

Gemini Insights

Drawings in cloud projects can be published to the insight solution Gemini Insights by right-clicking in the drawing list.

Procedure

  1. Select a drawing and right-click
  2. Activate Set as source for Gemini Insights 2D model and/or Set as source for Gemini Insights 3D model
  3. Right-click on the drawing again and select Publish model to Gemini Insights

While publishing is in progress, status is shown in separate dialog windows or in the project menu before final status is shown in the Publish column in the drawing list.

ZIP Drawings

You can find this function by selecting one or more drawings and pressing the right mouse button. Use the function to publish drawings from the office version of Gemini Terrain to Gemini 3D Field if Gemini Connected is not used. It is also useful for exchanging project data, for example in connection with support.

The drawings are imported into Gemini 3D Field by unpacking them in the current project folder in Windows Explorer.

Project Menu in Gemini 3D Field

In Gemini 3D Field, the project menu looks somewhat simpler than for the office version of Gemini Terrain. Due to space considerations, the table is divided vertically instead of horizontally, and some buttons have been removed. Only drawings marked with F will be listed in the selected project. This is called publishing and must be done from an office version of Gemini Terrain.

In Gemini 3D Field, all drawings will be opened in "Read only" mode, which means that:

  • Drawings opened in Gemini 3D Field will not be locked, so they can be edited in an office version
  • Drawings opened in the office version can simultaneously be open in Gemini 3D Field
  • It is not possible to make permanent changes to the drawings in Gemini 3D Field

Note

In Gemini 3D Field, all drawings are opened in read-only mode. Use Duplicate to create a copy of the selected drawing. The new drawing must then be given a new number. Empty drawings cannot be duplicated.
