Build Surfaces¶
Use this dialog to build Gemini theoretical layers. The layers are constructed according to the definitions in the road parameters (manual method).
Where do I find the dialog?¶
Right-click in the vertical list field for cross-sections, then select Build Surfaces.
Available Layers¶
Check the layers you want to build. You can build the following layers:
- Road surface (in the surface descriptions table)
- Superstructure
- Subgrade bottom
- Deep blasting
- Tunnel
- Extra layer (all other layers in the surface descriptions table)
Note
Locked profiles are not affected.
Info
Some tables for building require that you have used correct layer types for the physical layers. See the section Establish terrain models (layers) for more details.
Combinations of VIPS and Gemini Layers¶
You can choose between the following combinations of VIPS and Gemini layers:
-
Gemini theoretical layers versus VIPS physical layers
- VIPS physical layers are imported from the VIPS database.
- When building the surface layer, cut/fill is calculated relative to the VIPS physical layers.
- Superstructure/subgrade is calculated relative to the surface layer.
-
Gemini theoretical layers versus Gemini physical layers
- Gemini physical layers are generated from the terrain model.
- When building the surface layer, cut/fill is calculated relative to the Gemini physical layers.
- Superstructure/subgrade is calculated relative to the surface layer.
Forcing Cut/Fill¶
If the program's automation does not select cut/fill as desired, you can force a different solution.
The figure below shows two alternative solutions: cut (blue) and fill (red).

VIPS Import and Layer Display¶
If you have imported a VIPS project, you can display both VIPS layers and Gemini layers in the profiles. Note that there may be situations where Gemini theoretical layers are not built the same as VIPS theoretical layers. This is especially true for reinforcement layers and deep blasting, as not all tables that can be used in VIPS are read.
Manual Editing¶
If you cannot build the layers as desired, you can always solve the problem by editing the layers manually. It is recommended to lock manually edited profiles so that they are not accidentally rebuilt.
