Cross Sections

Use this dialog to generate cross sections along a horizontal curvature (line definition) in an SFI model.

Where to Find the Dialog

In the context menu of the terrain model drawing, select the Generate Cross Sections... icon.

The function behaves slightly differently depending on which calculation method is active in the SFI model: Automatic, Manual, 3D Lines, or Manual/3D Lines. With the automatic calculation method, all existing cross section data is deleted before new data is generated. For the other calculation methods, existing cross section data that is not regenerated remains unchanged.

If the file contains cross section data, you can view it with the Show Cross Sections button without generating new ones. A typical example is viewing VIPS data imported into an empty Gemini Terrain project.

All application layers that define a stratum can provide Gemini physical layers in the cross section. The list shows relevant strata. Check which ones to include in the cross sections.

Generating Cross Sections

Click the Generate Cross Sections button to create cross sections without displaying them. The program opens the presentation (plan/3D) that was active before generation.

Click the Generate and Show Cross Sections button to display the cross sections in the Cross Section Editing window (CSECT_EDIT).

Cross Section Area

With Pick Area... you can specify where on the line to create cross sections. Point and left-click to register the start and end of the profile. You can also enter the interval manually.

Tip

If you only want to create one profile, you can enter the same profile number twice.

If you want the program to delete existing cross sections outside the interval, check Delete Existing Cross Sections Outside Interval.

Create New/Missing Cross Sections

This option is only available for SFI models with the Manual calculation method. If you turn off this option, the program will only generate cross sections where profiles already exist. This is typical for SFI models containing imported VIPS data, where you want to generate comparable profiles that include both Gemini physical data and VIPS physical data.

If you check Create New/Missing Cross Sections, the program will also create new profiles as defined under the Profile Setup... button. This happens automatically when the calculation method is Automatic, and then it is not possible to turn off this option.

Options

You can set some options during cross section generation:

  • Include 3D Objects (Advanced Section)
  • Calculate from Adjusted Terrain

Info

The options are described in more detail in the general user documentation.

Parameters for Triangulation

This option is available when generating cross sections through a stratum containing point clouds (scan data), and the calculation method for cross section data is set to From Original Data. The parameters are specified for real-time triangulation around each profile, which then forms the basis for the terrain section itself.
