Sight Distance Control

Use this dialog to control sight distance in SFI models. We can choose between stopping sight distance and meeting sight distance.

Where do I find the dialog?

On the Planning, design and execution toolbar in terrain model drawing, select the icon Sight distance control...

Overview

Meeting sight distance is available for narrow roads. This is an option in the road class that in practice tells us that the road is too narrow for two cars to pass each other.

Sight distance control creates a command, Sight lines(.sfi), in the command list.

The parameters for calculating sight distances are found in the parameter setup for the road class in the SFI model.

We can also create an Excel report of the sight distance control. The Copy to Excel button places the result on the clipboard, so we can paste it into Excel afterwards.

Visual indicators

The direction of the sight line is marked with an arrow both in plan and 3D. Sight lines without conflict are green, while sight lines with conflict are red.

We can choose to show all sight lines or only those that intersect layers in the SFI model. Furthermore, we can also have the area where they intersect marked in plan with a polygon.

Running a sight distance control

Procedure

  1. Select the Sight distance control... function on the toolbar
  2. Select Method in the dropdown menu
  3. Select Driving direction in the dropdown menu
  4. Select Sight line interval in the dropdown menu
  5. Click OK and the sight lines are drawn immediately

Note

The command for Sight lines is dynamic, meaning that the sight lines are updated continuously when changes are made to the road class, and the sight distance control is run continuously when changes are made to physical and theoretical layers (the road's design and placement in the terrain).
