Insert Legend

Use this dialog to insert a legend in the drawing. A legend can be inserted both in plan view and on sheets in presentation drawing.

Where do I find the dialog?

On the toolbar in terrain model drawing and presentation drawing, select Legend...

All legends that are defined in the project (prefix P) or in the common user folder (prefix U) are available in the dropdown list. With Edit... we open the dialog to change the content of the active legend.

There is a lot of automation built into the function, but you can change some parameters that control the legend's layout. These are found under Options, and they are mostly self-explanatory. Otherwise, just try out the parameters - the changes are automatically updated on the screen.

Procedure

  1. Select Legend icon Legend on the toolbar
  2. Click Edit... to create new legend or select already defined legend in dropdown list
  3. Optionally change parameters under Options to control layout
  4. Click OK in the dialog
  5. Point and click left mouse button to set upper left corner
  6. Point and click left mouse button to set lower right corner

Scaling factor for figures

Default value for scaling factor for figures is 1.0. This means that figures used in presentations (e.g. point symbol or figure repetition along line) are displayed at the same scale in the legend as in the map excerpt/terrain model. By changing this value, you can choose to override the size of figures in the legend independently of the map excerpt.

Change size dynamically

After the legend is placed, we can change the size dynamically using grip handles. Furthermore, we can select the number of columns the legend should have. If we for example have two columns, the program will automatically fill out the second column from the top when necessary, that is when the height is too small to accommodate all symbols in one column. Note that the columns will always be equally wide.

We can also check Keep groups together. This option starts a new column with the group name.

If descriptions are long, we can select Break text. This will distribute the text on two lines. Note that this option cannot be combined with Fill page.
